Centre writes to states warning of new COVID variant, cautions against international travel

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan on Thursday wrote to Additional Chief Secretary(Health) of all States and UTs in the country warning them of new Covid-19 variant cases that have been reported in Botswana, South Africa, and Honk Kong. 

Botswana, South Africa and Honk Kong reported three, six and one case each of the new COVID-19 variant 8.1.1529 so far. 

The Health Secretary also warned the states and UTs to be cautious against the new variant and urged them to conduct rigorous screening and testing of international travelers arriving from said countries. 

“Imperative that all int’l travellers travelling from & transiting through these nations & incl other ‘at risk’ nations indicated in revised guidelines for int’l arrivals are subjected to rigorous screening &testing. Their contacts must also be tracked & tested,” reads the letter.
